Ralph Edwin Dunn, Motor Machinist's mate, second class, of Dunbar, R. D. 1, took part in the occupation and demilitarization of Japan while serving on the destroyer USS Caperton, which sailed into Japan's home water as a unit of Task Forces 35 and 53.
Previous to its occupation assignment, the Caperton had been in operations in the Gilbert Islands, Marshalls, the Bismarck Archipelago, western New Guinea, Marianas, western Carolines, Leyte and Luzon. She also figured in a number of Asiatic-Pacific raids in 1944, the occupation and defense of Okinawa and the souther Ryukyus, and in attacks against Tokyo and other Jap Cities.
